What is not possible in Cape Town?
It might sound almighty, yet that is the first question
that rises when we are talking about outdoor activities.
The Western Cape is the perfect place for outdoor activities.
Let it be swimming, walking, hiking, caving, climbing, horse-riding,
sailing, sail boarding, surfing, diving, boating or fishing,
to name a few.
Surfing is popular in Cape Town and some
of the world's leading surfers are resident here. Spectacular
surfing competitions like the Red Bull Big Wave are held
during the winter months. There are over 50 popular beach
surf spots, of which Llandudno and Kommetjie are the more
reknown for more experienced , and Muizenberg for beginners
and the experts
Sailing - Conquer the Atlantic Ocean on
a sailboat or sail around the Cape. Feel like the Dutch
and British sailors two centuries ago and sail around the
Peninsula to grasp the
Hiking is popular among the locals. First
of all you should hike Table Mountain, but Lions Head and
Devils Peak are nice climbs as well. Start early in the
morning to see the sunset or late in the afternoon for a
beautiful sundown and seeing the 'artificial light going
on' in Cape Town. It is not advisable to climb up the mountain
without someone experienced who knows the route well. Brilliant
walks can be done all over the Peninsula, There are shipwreck
trails, rock pool hikes and whale watching trails
Golf - There is a vast number of golf
courses which offering quality in and around Cape Town.
You can choose your own view: mountains, ocean, nature,
animals or the wine lands. It is your choice The Royal Cape
is the oldest and Arrabella probably the most exquisite.
Canoeing - White water enthusiasts will
be pleased to know that the Cape's rivers will oblige. Trips
on the Breede, Berg, Dorings and Orange Rivers may be arranged.
Also Paddle skiing can be done in Simon's Town and Hout
Bay, amongst many other places.
Horse riding in the Wine lands of the
Western Cape is an outdoor you really can't miss. The incredibly
beautiful surrounding by mountains, vine-estates, grape-fields
won't disappoint you. You can also make a nice beach-trip
on a horse in for example Noordhoek's never ending beach
Cricket has been played in Cape Town since
the early days of British occupation. South Africa's cricket
team is one of the best in the world and facilities at Newlands
Cricket Grounds are outstanding. For visitors it comes highly
recommended to attend provincial or international matches.
Cycling & Mountain Biking - Although
you won't see many people riding a bicycle in the city,
there are many nice cycle routes possible. Cape Town is
home to the famous Argus Cycle Tour of the Peninsula, which
takes place in March every year. Also there are more and
more extreme and less extreme mountain bike rides set up,
including several around Table Mountain
Deep sea game fishing - Some of the finest
big game fishing in the world is available here - in particular
long yellow fin tuna and broad billed swordfish. Catch some

Bungy-jumping - the ultimate in outdoor adverture, possible
from Table Mountain, the highest bungy-jump in the world
can be experienced at Bloukrans. No further introduction
needed.
Horse racing in Cape Town is closely entwined
with local life. There are two tracks - Kenilworth and Durbanville.
Racing takes place every Wednesday and Saturday. Every year
in February The J&B Met (comparable with England's Ascott)
takes place for the rich and famous to show the good life
Rugby is the favorite sport of South Africans
and the Springbok team are national hero's. When there is
a rugby play, you'll find out that shops will close earlier,
the streets are empty and every pub with a television will
be overcrowded. Support the Cape Town stormers during your
stay and friends will be made easily. Attending a game is
an experience close to the field.
Windsurfing is another favourite, with
Blouberg beach the main area where one can witness the most
extreme jumps and tricks. Lange Baan Lagoon and Clan William
Dam are also popular. Many surfers come back every Cape
Town summer for the perfect surfs in Cape Town.
Scuba diving is one of the largest growing
sports in Cape Town and there are many areas suitable for
this exciting sport. The many shipwrecks and bays provide
ample assistance in deciding where to dive
Tennis courts can be found at most hotels
and there are many sports clubs in and around the city which
will accommodate visitors. Always a comfortable pass time.
Sky Diving is possible in Melkbos and
Citrusdal. The most amazing experience is jumping out of
a plane with a Table Mountain to keep a heading.
Parasailing is to be experienced in over
37 places in Cape Town. A premiere location is the Lion's
Head one. A little walk to het the canopy afloat and you
can spend up to half an hour in the air looking at The Twelve
apostles, the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain before landing
at La Med.
