On 6 December 2000 a new Council came into being - the new City of Cape Town. This new council is an amalgamation of the previous 6 metropolitan local councils (MLCs), namely Blaauwberg Municipality, City of Cape Town, City of Tygerberg, Helderberg Municipality, Oostenberg Municipality, South Peninsula Municipality and the Cape Metropolitan Council.

Nomaindia Mfeketo Mayor of Cape Town

Getting Elected: A background
Even though the African National Congress just won 38 percent of the vote in the municipal elections held in 2000, the mayor of the city- Nomaindia Mfeketo- is an ANC member. This comes about due to political in-fighting within the alliance that won the election in 2000. With the National party having decided to split from the Democratic Alliance and go into government with the ANC.

Getting the Vote
There are two ways in which local councillors can be elected on the City Council; one is through direct elections where a candidate stands in a ward or through proportional representation where a candidate is elected onto a seat from a party list. This depends on
the votes garnered. The city has 200 councillors, with a 50/50 split between proportional representation and directly elected ward councillors.

Running the city
• The entire Cape Metropolitan Council consists of 100 wards.
• The Mayor is appointed by the largest party in the council, or the largest coalition in the case of Cape Town.
• The city manager, Wallace Mgoqi, is responsible for executing the policies of the political leadership in council,
• The mayor being at the head of such decisions.

Blurb: The Cape Town Metropolitan Council allows citizens to access their local representatives through an extensive database of councillors and their contact details.
