Transformation
Since 1994 the government has tried to change all facets
of life for South Africans, through providing basic services
to all, free primary healthcare to children and pregnant
mothers. The country has also been accepted back into the
international family of nations with sanctions both economic
and cultural lifted.
Political
Since 1994 the ANC has consolidated its powerbase, presently
with a 2/3 majority, which it gives it power to change the
constitution to favour it. It has repeatedly said that it
won’t change the constitution. This follows the “walk-over
clause,” legislation that allows members of parliament
from other party to join the ANC without losing their seats
in parliament.
Parliament
Parliament used to be set up along the British model with
the largest party winning the election. The New South Africa
have adopted the European model that is more inclusive and
is more in tune with a cosmopolitan society which South
Africa has become. With 400 members of parliament, more
than 66 percent of the members belong to the ANC.
