Sports in the Mother City
The general good weather in Cape Town and South Africa affords
people the opportunity to spend much of their spare time
outdoors, either participating in sport or being spectators
at several of the stadiums in the city.
What, where, when?
The biggest sports codes in South Africa are cricket,
rugby,soccer,
golf and
cycling
The summer months see cricket, and to a lesser extent football
vie for attention of fans and the media. At least each newspaper
has a dedicated cricket, football and rugby writer.
The football season in South Africa corresponds with that
of Europe. South Africa has won
the right to host the 2010
soccer World Cup -- the first to be held on the African
continent. Cape
Town has 2professional clubs playing in South Africa's Premier
Soccer League.
Professional rugby
is played for about eight months of the year in South Africa.
Cape Town has several amateur clubs with professional teams
like Western Province and the Stormers, playing in the Super
12.
cycling
The Chapman’s Peak let me breathless as we
travelled over this spectacular drive. As I turned round
and saw the mountain bikes strapped on the back of the vehicle,
I had a daunting feeling wash over me, this is going to
be a day full of adventure.
Golf
Weather conditions are great, most of the year, courses
are in good condition and the exchange rate is perfect for
tourist to come down for a golf safari. It’s not a
surprise: golf nowadays is the fastest growing sport in
South Africa. And Ernie Ells is the local Tiger Woods.
