Soccer is widely played amongst all Capetonians with three
professional clubs playing in the national Premier Soccer
League; Ajax, Hellenic and Santos,.
Where
Amateur soccer thrives on the Cape Flats where it’s
played on municipal sports grounds or any available open
space on weekends.
Many football players, now plying their trade in thetough
European leagues, come from Cape Town, and more specifically
the CapeFlats where soccer is the dominant sport.
The two stadiums where games are played is Newlands Rugby
Stadium, home to Ajax Cape Town, and Athlone Stadium, home
to Santos. Hellenic shares the Athlone stadium with Santos.
The Fans
Unlike like European fans, locals are as not fanatical about
their local soccer. You’re most likely to find someone
wearing a Manchester United shirt than that of a South African
team.
Fans never get into brawls once their favourite team has
lost a game, a few tears may be shed but never a physical
confrontation.
The professional clubs with the largest following are the
Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. These
two teams command a huge following across South Africa.
Local clubs find it hard to fans to their games. Only during
crucial encounters, or when the Soweto giants are in town,
would one find a reasonable crowd at a soccer game.
The Future
Clubs in Europe have identified the talent on offer
in South Africa. Many youngsters have gone overseas before
they have played professional soccer in South Africa.
Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam invested heavily in establishing
a local team to compete in the league competition. That
investment is expected to bear fruits in the future with
players from Ajax Cape Town being traded to overseas clubs.
